Biography

William David Franklin took part in the fighting around Metz and Bastogne. On December 20th , 1944, he was taken prisoner by the Germans and was interned in Stalg IV-B in Muhlberg-am-Elbe and served in Arbeitskommando 1315 in Zittau. During his imprisonment he was hospiltalized in Siefhennersdorf and in Schmorkau. He was liberated on April 21st by Soviet troops and returned to American command on May 20th, 1945.
Apart from his personal decorations, William D. Franklin was also entitled to wear the Distinguished Unit Badge.

"For heroic achievement in connecction with military operatons against an enemy of the United States in BELGIUM on 19 December 1944. During an engagement with the enemy in the vicinity of FOY, BELGIUM, a tank was hit and set afire by a shell of an enemy 88 mm gun, wounding two of the crew members so severely they were unable to escape. with utter disregard for his personal safety, with the potential danger of exploding gasoline and ammunition, Corporal
FRANKLIN, the tank gunner, with the assistance of the tank driver, removed the two wounded men from the blazing vehicle to a place of safety where they administered first aid. After insuring that the injured men were proprly cared for by medical aid personnel, Corporal FRANKLIN left the scene with the intention of returning to friendly lines. To this date, however, he has not rejoined his organization and has been reported missing in action. The courageous and unselfish actions of Corporal FRANKLIN, in the face of grave danger, reflect great credit upon himself and the military forces of the United States."
