On August 26th, 1939, Richard Hengstler was posted to III. Abteilung / (Scheinwerfer) Flak-Regiment 9 as Leutnant der Reserve and Zugführer. Until May 1942 he served with a Flakscheinwerfer-Regiment, attached to Flakscheinwerfer-Division 2. Following this, he was posted to Stab / 2. Jagd-Division in the rank of Oberleuntant der Reserve. He served on this staff as 3 Generalstabsoffizier (Ic). Between February 9th, 1943 and May 31st, 1944 he served with Flakscheinwerfer-Abteilung 708 in Nuremberg.
Between June 1st and June 27th, 1944, he took a conversion course at Fallschirm-Artillerie-Ausbildungsabteilung in Iserlohn, after which he ended up with the Fallschirm-Sturmgeschütz-rigade 12. In January 1945, Hengstler served as Chef, 1. Batterie / Fallschirm-Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 12.
