Peterus Johannes van Gils was living in Bergen op Zoom, the Netherlands, at the Zuid Oostsingel 11. He was married to Emilie Proost (son: Petrus Johannes van Gils, born on December 17th, 1944, Bergen op Zoom). Van Gils was miltary / tax officer and Roman Catholic. In 1943 he refused to report for imprisonment as POW and went into hiding on May 6th, 1943. He was a member of the resistance with the aliasses Piet van Bergen, PIet Brabant and Harry. His work was helping Jewish people, crashed Allie pilots, and spreading the illegal newspapers Trouw and Vrij Nederland. Early 1944 he and his pregnant wife were arrested. Due to her pregnancy his wife was released but van Gils was taken to Camp Vught. On August 5th, 1944 he was centensed to death and executed five days later. He received pothumously the Verzetsherdelingskruis. His name is engraved at the execution wall and remembrance wall at Camp Vught. Van Gils was cremated in concentrationcamp Vught.
