Awarded for his actions during the combat of the 4. Gebirgs-Division in autumn 1943 on the southern section of the Eastern front. On the 03.11.1943 Hackl and his Schwadron were deployed as a rearguard in order to support a flanking thrust by the rest of the Abteilung into the rear of Soviet forces that threatened to overtake the Division as it retreated. Hackl and his men fought off one attack after another the whole day long. Only after the last supply wagon and the last man were through did this rearguard force finally fall back at 01:00. Hackl and his men had achieved a victory of wide significance, while showing extraordinary steadfastness in the process. Hackl would be awarded appropriately for this action.
