    August 5th, 1940
Awarded for the outstanding command of his Bataillon during the Battle of France, and in particular for the following actions…

    1) Installing a 16 ton bridge over the Aisne river near Barby under very difficult conditions while attached to the XIII. Armee-Korps (09.06.1940). This was one of only two bridges that were successfully completed over this river (out of a planned total of eight), and it was crucial in bringing the advance of Guderian’s Panzers back into motion.

    2) On the 13.06.1940 the 29. Infanterie-Division (mot) was held up on the Marne and Rhine-Marne canal by tough French resistance. In this situation Oberstleutnant Hecker was once again able to help the advance to resume by throwing up a bridge near Bignicourt in an unexpectedly short time.

    3) Creating another important bridge, this time over the Saône river at Pontailler, on the 16.06.1940. Despite strong French attempts at intervention and the lack of equipment, Hecker managed to quickly form a usable bridge with improvised means on this day and thus permit Guderian’s Gruppe to cross the river and reach Doubs (located on the Swiss border). Hecker thus had a decisive share in completing the encirclement of the French forces positioned along the Maginot Line.
