Lieutenant (junior grade)

Citation:
“For distinguishing himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity in action while flying a carrier based plane in a torpedo attack on an enemy battleship east of SAMAR ISLAND on October 25, 1944. When our escort carrier group was under fire and threatened with annihilation by an overwhelming enemy force, without assistance from fighters or bombers to silence or divert the intense enemy anti-aircraft fire, he unhesitatingly dove through the enemy barrage and coolly made a run on the foremost enemy battle ship forcing it to break off its attack and to retire. His skill and inspiring courage against such odds were at all times in keeping with the highest tradition of the Naval Service.”
