Citation:
"For heroic achievement in action on 25th September 1944, in the vicinity of Mendozza, Italy. During the attack of the 350th Infantry, a counterattack was suffered. In an effort to stem the attack, 81mm mortar ammunition was fast becoming exhausted. The trail back to the mule train where extra ammunition was available, was under observation, and muderous machine gun, mortar, rifle, and artillery fire. Sergeant Di Chiara immidiately and with utter disregard for his own life or personal safety, volunteered to go for the desperately needed ammunition. He made the trip bringing back mule loaded with ammunition although the enemy raked the trail constantly with machine guns and mortars in an attempt to stop the supplies. One mule was killed by their fire. Segeant Di Chiara's action saved the position for the battalion, and enabled them to continue to press the attack against the enemy. His act was an inspiration for all who know him, and exemplifies the highest traditions of the Armed Forces."
