Recommendation:
"For conspicuous gallantry in action. On the 1st December this officer was in command of a company, part of a Battalion which was entirely surrounded in enemy territory, and being attacked by superior forces including A.F.V's. In spite of very heavy casualties and with utter disregard of his personal safety and by his devotion to duty, he whilst under heavy mortar, artillery and machine gun fire, inspired his officers and men to hold the position at all costs thereby enabling the remainder of the Battalion to withdraw and finally regain the British Lines. This company was reduced to 5 O.R.'s which he successfully led trough many miles of enemy occupied territory to rejoin his Battalion. The courage and leadership of this officer throughout the operation was of the highest order."
