Recommendation:
"905190 Bdr Walter Findlay 288 Fd Bty R.A. On July 1st when 288 Fd Bty were supporting 18th Indian Bde at Deir El Shein position near Alamein this signaller assisted the NCO I/C Sigs on line maintenance throughout the day. The lines were constantly being cut by either shell fire or action of our own tanks and he helped to repair them. This was done in spite of heavy shell fire, for the line lay over some very exposed ground. In the afternoon he laid a line by hand to a new OP thus enabling the Battery to go on firing. Findlay later acted as a runner between Bde HQ and Bty HQ when line communications broke down. He carried much important information over an area which was swept by shells and machine gun fire. Findlay showed great courage and devotion in his determination to have communications through at all times."
