Biography

Lived in Amsterdam, Witte de Withstraat 82-I. Son of Dirk Bons (12 June 1897 Brandwijk) and Johanna Bak (24 August 1896 Dordrecht). Unmarried. Office clerk at artillery establishments in Zaandam, then at the Municipal Work Expansion programme in Amsterdam, later correspondent for the National Agency for Hides and Leather. Reformed. Member of the resistance.
He used the pseudonyms Ton, Alex and Ad. When he was threatened with forced labour in July 1943, he went into hiding in Friesland. In that province he became a member of the resistance and joined the LO. He then ended up in Heemse. Bons was mainly involved in helping people in hiding and helping British airmen escape. He also carried out courier services.
In July 1944, he returned to Amsterdam. He and his father founded the Reintje de Vos resistance group, which later became part of the Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten (Domestic Armed Forces). He participated in raids on distribution offices and town halls. He was arrested on 27 March 1945 as a result of the betrayal of a neighbour from upstairs at Händelstraat 1hs. The SD (German Security Service) entered the building just as a resistance meeting was taking place. He was executed along with nine others, including his father Dirk Bons.
His name is inscribed on the monument De Opgeheven Hand (The Raised Hand) at the execution site and on the memorial stone on the facade of the building at Witte de Withstraat 80 in Amsterdam.
He was posthumously awarded the Yad Vashem decoration on 5 February 1985, as were Bons Sr. and his twin brother Jacobus Pieter.
He was also posthumously awarded the Resistance Cross of Honour.
A memorial stone bearing his name was placed at the Dr H. Bavinck School in Amsterdam-Noord shortly after the war.
