Citation:
"During the night of February 18-19, 1944, an important reconnaissance patrol, consisting of an officer, Pte. Jakel and another private penetrated more than 500 yards behind the enemy lines northwest of Crecchio. The patrol remained there, concealed long enough to obtain all the information for which they were sent out. But, on the returning, they ran into a mine, about 40 yards from the enemy's position. The mine's explosion fatally wounded the two other members of the patrol, and seriously wounded Pte. Jakel in one arm and leg.
Although Pte. Jakel was in an area he knew to be mined, and was in close proximity to an enemy patrol which was even then investigating the explosion, he crawled back to his companions and did everything in his power to assist them. Only when it proved impossible, because of his own wounds to carry either of his companions, did he crawl back to his own lines. There he inisted on reporting the information gained on the patrol before he allowed himself to be evacuated to hospital.
In his efforts to save the balance of the patrol, despite his serious wounds, and in his grim determination to bring back the required information, Pte. Jakel displayed fortitude and valor above and beyond the line of normal duty."
