The following newspaper excerpt (dated 14.06.1943) describes why Zickwolff received the Knight’s Cross…

“Generalleutnant Friedrich Zickwolff… and his Infanterie-Division had an invaluable share in the defense against enemy attacks in the Kharkov area. In every situation that arose here Generalleutnant Zickwolff’s flexible leadership and ruthless devotion to duty were sufficient to successfully master the challenging combat that his Division was engaged in.”

This text refers to Zickwolff’s achievements while commanding the 113. Infanterie-Division during the Second Battle of Kharkov. In this time he and his Division played a leading role in preventing a Soviet breakthrough along the northeastern edge of the salient, being vital for stabilizing the German frontline along the Berestovaya river for two days. By skillfully extracting his forces Zickwolff was able to threaten the northern flank of the Soviet advance, forcing them to divert strong forces to face Zickwolff’s Division. This sufficiently weakened the Soviet assault wedge to a point where it was unable to capture Krasnograd.
