Citation:
"For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy of the United States in Luxembourg on 19 December, 1944. During an enemy counterattack in the town of Bergdorf, Luxembourg, Sergeant Miller, a machine gunner, was assigned the mission of covering the withdrawal of an infantry platoon. His machine gun was emplaced in a building facing an open field over which the numerically superior hostile force was attacking. With utter disregard for his own safety amidst a hail of enemy bazooka and machine gun fire, he remained at his post directing fire against the enemy until they were within thirty yards of his position, inflicting heavy casualties. When it became necessary for his own withdrawal, he boldly ran forty yards amidst a lethal hail of enemy projectiles to rejoin his successfully withdrawing organization. Sergeant Miller's intrepidity, courage and loyal devotion to duty under fire reflect great credit upon himself, his organization and the military forces of the United States"
