"For distinguishing himself by meritorious achievement in connection withmilitary operations against an enemy of the United States on 2 and 3 May 1945 in Germany. When word was received from higher headquarters to undertake the liberation of some 18,000 Allied Prisoners of War from the Prisoner of War Camp at Altengrabow, Germant, Lieutenant Magill assompanied the mercy taskforce that drove 26 kilometers inside the German lines and by his efficiency and devotion to duty contributed materially in the mass evacuation from Altengrabow through Zarbst, the last American outpost of the bridgehead east of the Elbe River, Germany."

"Distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services. On 9 September 1944, while conducting extensive patrol activities South of the Loire River, France, Lieutenant Magill learned that the Commander of a large German force had indicated willingness to surrender to American troops. Although scrupulously avoiding commitments beyond his authority, Lieutenant Magill displayed outstanding initiative and intelligence in establishing direct liaison with the German commander and in arranging a conference which led to the capitulation of almost 20,000 German troops. His effort prior to and during the consummation of this mass surrender were of exceptional merit and reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States."
