Awarded for actions in the Demyansk pocket. Sometime during the early fighting for the pocket Major Graf von der Goltz made the independent decision to throw the Soviets out of some recently lost battle positions with only a few hastily assembled soldiers. The success of this action ensured that the line Wjasowka—Dedno was held and prevented the Soviets from penetrating into the Demyansk perimeter. This outstanding action was of great importance for the continued combat in this sector.

The Jägerregiment 138 under the leadership of Oberstleutnant Graf von der Goltz, a Panzer group under the command of Major von Gaza as well as Sturmgeschützabteilung 243 and the Heeres-Panzerjägerabteilung 721 distinguished themselves in the defensive battles southeast of Zaporizhia.
On the 29.09.1943 Oberstleutnant Graf von der Goltz succeeded in sealing off a deep, tank-supported Soviet breakthrough near Heidelberg (southeast of Zaporozhye) with a motley of supply troops and alarm companies. He then recaptured the old German frontline in a bold, personally led counterthrust.
