Sometime during the early fighting for the pocket Major Graf von der Goltz made the independent decision to throw the Soviets out of some recently lost battle positions with only a few hastily assembled soldiers. The success of this action ensured that the line Wjasowka—Dedno was held and prevented the Soviets from penetrating into the Demyansk perimeter. This outstanding action was of great importance for the continued combat in this sector.

On the 29.09.1943 Oberstleutnant Graf von der Goltz succeeded in sealing off a deep, tank-supported Soviet breakthrough near Heidelberg (southeast of Zaporozhye) with a motley of supply troops and alarm companies. He then recaptured the old German frontline in a bold, personally led counterthrust.
