Biography

As an assistant in Anatomy at the University of Groningen, conflicts with his boss, NSB member De Burlett, were inevitable. Discharged in March 1944. He gathered some friends around him and together with them provided the students with money, vouchers, etc. After his discharge he was able to devote himself fully to this task and he did this with admirable enthusiasm. Contact with the LO dates from that time. He was specially charged with housing; he became a true virtuoso in searching and finding addresses. The railroad strike gave him the opportunity to fully develop his talents in this field and many railroad men thank “Dr. v.d. Steen" a safe haven. On January 24, 1945, his versatile activity, which managed to draw others along with it due to its infectious enthusiasm, came to an untimely end. An appointment at the Spilslokken, Groningen, proved fatal for him. This headquarters of the LO had been betrayal to Lehnhoff et al. became known and Diemer fell into the trap of the SD. He was taken to the House of Detention and stayed there until March 17 who shared a cell with him will always remember Diemer with gratitude. On March 17, he and 96 others were deported to the infamous Neuengamme. Around mid-April Diemer was transported again, we did not see him again. Later information showed that he had been taken to Sandbostel. The liberation came on April 29.
Diemer was last seen there on May 10, 1945, ill. After that nothing more. He is one of the great army of the missing.
