The following wartime excerpt describes why Rothkirch received the Knight’s Cross…
“Generalmajor von Rothkirch und Panthen entered into the city of Trones behind his first recon patrols, coming under enemy fire as he did so. In this capacity he contributed significantly to the swift fall of the city. After the divisional staff was involved in a heavy firefight a total of 6000 prisoners were taken in this bold strike. Numerous war materiel was also captured, and the seizure of the city furthermore cut off the retreat of additional French forces towards the southwest.”
