"Flight Sergeant Mitchell has successfully completed 37 operational sorties and has proved himself to be a captain of great determination and skill. He has attacked the most heavily defended targets deep into Germany including Stuttgart, Bohlen, Magdeburg, and Ludwigshaven. His photographic records reveal a high standard of crew co-operation at all times, and reflect personally on his skill as a pilot. His tour has consisted of many daylight assaults on industrial targets in the Ruhr, and despite fierce opposition he pressed home his attacks with good results. Flight Sergeant Mitchell is a most competent and reliable N.C.O. who has displayed a fine fighting spirit, which has gained him the respect and admiration of all who knew him. His work on the ground is of a high order, worthily upholding the high traditions of the Royal Air Force."
