He has distinguished himself by courageous and tactful conduct in connection with enemy action and in so doing, having served the interest of the Kingdom as organizer of the resistance movement in Raalte and successor of Captain Lancker, head of the Resistance Council in Salland after the latter was killed in February 1945. Mr. Hoppen did all kinds of resistance work, aiding downed members of aircraft crews, receiving and transporting agents landed by prachute etc. In this capacity he was arrested in 1942, in France near the demarcation line on his way to England. After two months he managed to escape and went into hiding in Lichtenvoorde where he assisted in setting up the pilot line Brabant and Limburg. In 1943, he joined the resistance in Raalte, led by Captain Lancker.
