During the fighting west of Cassino, starting on the 18.05.1944, Major Pick found himself attached to the 26. Panzer-Division with several elements of his Division. On 21.05.1944 the 3rd Algerian Infantry Division began its attack on Pico. In the confused fighting which followed, Pick would command a total of 7 separate battalions or Kampfgruppen at different points in the battle.
The big crisis came on the 24.05.1944, when the French broke through. Major Pick, with a group of about 30-40 men, stormed out a cellar into the midst of the surprised French forces and managed to seal off the penetration. Meanwhile the II./Grenadier-Regiment 577 (with the 5. Kompanie attached) managed to eliminate a penetration at Colle Grande. Finally, the II./Grenadier-Regiment 578 fought fiercely and successfully held into its strongpoint at Colle Tronco.
Pick and his men had thus managed to prevent a breakthrough by the 3rd Algerian and 2nd Moroccan Divisions. For this Pick would receive the Oakleaves to his Knight’s Cross.
