He has distinguished himself by courageous conduct in combat against the enemy by having joined an important military intelligence group in the occupied Netherlands in April 1944 and having continued to work for it, initially as a scout and later as leader of a sector until the liberation in May 1945. In particular for having frequently penetrated hardly accessible and restricted dune terrain in order to obtain valuable information and for having been captured twice and having managed to escape with extreme cunning and adroitness after one or two days, each time continuing his work energetically. At the same time for having managed his sector well, having seen to the forwarding of actual and frequent information and only having ended his work when the Allies arrived. By this conduct having rendered important services to the Allied conduct of the war and the Dutch Government.
