Johannes van Eijk arrived in Spain on the 31st of August 1937, here he joined the international brigade to take part in the fighting. He got shot through his arm while fighting there. He married a Spanish woman and returned to the Netherlands on the 19th of December 1938.

His Dutch nationality was taken away from him and wasn't returned to him until the 27th of April 1965!
