Temporary Major

5th Medium Regiment R.A., 2nd Army Group, First Army, British Army
Awarded on:
September 13th, 1943
"I consider that Major Hamilton has rendered distinguished service through the battles fought with 46 Division, and is worthy of a higher award than "Mentioned in Despatches".

His destruction of enemy tanks from his O.P. on FRENCHMAN HILL during the battle of HUNTS GAP, Feb 26th - Mar 6th greatly helped in breaking up the German attack. He commanded during my absence with 70th Field Group (Mar 6th - Mar 30th) and rendered valuable service as C.R.A.'s resp with 138 Brigade during the second TAMERA battle, breaking up an enemy counter attack on 29 Mar by means of heavy concentrations.

The pains taken to produce an efficient system of mule transport for O.P. parties proved most valuable and worked exceedingly well during an assault on the MAHDI features.

This officer acted as Group Rep during the Armoured breakthrough at MEJEZ EL BAB on the 6th May and was wounded in the action at HAMMAN LIF on May 9th.

This officer has never spared himself and has inspired all with his leadership, command an ability to meet all situations."

[In handwritten: "This Major has done extremely valuable work"]
Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)
