"This officer commanded a squadron of Armoured Cars which broke through the enemy mine-fields at EL ALAMEIN on the night of 1/2 November. He passed through several enemy leaguers in daylight and later showed conspicuous initiative and determination in keeping his cars in action in the face of repeated air attacks. This squadron destroyed over 70 enemy transport vehicles, 1 medium, 3 field and 15 A/Tank guns and other equipment, besides taking a very large number of prisoners, a success that was in great measure due to Major Hamilton-Russell's resource and personal example. These were of a high order throughout a most difficult operation which entailed several days behind the enemy lines."
