"Captain Alfred R. Schaal, Air Corps, 0-1xxxxx2, for exceptionally meritorious service in connection with operations against the enemy, as Special Inspector for Odnance for the Air Inspector's Division of Headquarters Army Air Forces, India-Burma Theater and Army Air Forces, China Theater from 23, January 1945 to 2 September 1945. captain Schaal's outstanding initiative, determination and conscienciousness have been far above and beyond that normally expected and his efficiency and thoroughness have contributed immeasurably to the mission of the Air Inspector's Section. His duties have required him to make frequent and ardous field trips by air and by motor, including a motor trip over the Ledo Road from Chabua, Assam to Kunming, China, as officer in charge of a motor convoy over the Hump. His intelligent contribution to the mission of the Air Inspector, his careful interpretation of War Department and THeater directives and his insistence on their proper application throught the Command, reflects great credit on himself and the Army Air Forces of the United States."
