On Oct. 14; 1944 at Hatterath, Germany, a noise was heard on a telephone connecting company headquarters with an outlying observation post, then the line went dead. Another outpost some 400 yards distant reported an explosion and noises near the outpost, and Sgt. Pugsley went to investigate. He found the mortal- observer at the outpost injured a grenade. He repaired the ;elephone, called for aid for the wounded man, alerted the guards and stayed in the position until relieved, despite mortar fire, grenades, and small arms fire. lis initiative and leadership were outstanding as he reorganized the position and brought fire to force .he enemy to withdraw."
