"In Jul 41, a month after his capture in LIBYA, BURGESS braved the sentries' fire in escaping from BENGHAZI. Two days later he was recaptured by Arabs and was sent via CAPUA and SERVIGLIANO to MACERATA (Camp 3).
Employed on patrol duties on 15 Sep 43, BURGESS was apprehended by the Germans on their arrival at the camp. On 22 Sep 43, when entrained for GERMANY, he succeeded in jumping from the train near RIMINI, and before reporting to the Allied forces at ASCOLI nine months later, lived with Italians.
For a short period he served with partisans."
