"For distinguished service and heroism in the line of his profession while serving on board the U.S.S. Mustin during the engagement with Japanse Naval forces near Santa Cruz Islands on October 26, 1942. With utter disregard for his own personal safety, Goldner courageously braved shark-infested waters to assist in the rescue of survivors from a damaged carrier. His gallant acts were performed while enemy planes continued to attack the task force. On one occasion he swam without his life jacket to the aid of a drowning survivor and brought him safely aboard, undoubtedly saving the man's life. Thereafter he made repeated trips with lines and buoys to other distant men calling for help. While so engaged his ship was forced to depart from the area at high speed to avoid air attack. Goldner swam to one of the life rafts loaded with men and further aided rescue work there until able to return to the Mustin in the last boat load of survivors. His courageous conduct and heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Naval Service.
W.F. Halsey, Admiral, U.S. Navy"
