Jonkheer Egon Lodewijk Maria Theresia Von Bönninghausen was a member of the noble family Von Bönninghausen. His father Ernst was director of a life insurance company.
Von Bönninghausen was appointed mayor of Oostmarsum in 1926, an office he held for 12 years. He was dishonorably discharged on March 1, 1939 due to pro-German sentiments and a protest to the Central Appeals Board was rejected on October 26, 1939.
Von Bönninghausen became a member of the NSB in March 1940 and was appointed mayor of Tubbergen on October 1, 1940. As mayor of Tubbergen he joined the Dutch SS, but left it again after his appointment as commissioner for the province of Overijssel on 11 August 1941. Von Bönninghausen became Oppenbanleider at the Weerbaarheidsafdeling (WA) not much later.
Von Bönninghausen left on 28 August 1942 as a volunteer of the Vrijwilligerslegioen Nederland for the Eastern Front where he succumbed at the age of 43 to his wounds on 26 February 1943. He was unmarried.
He was also the leader of the Algemeene Nederlansche Jagersvereeniging.
