The following wartime excerpt (dated 30.08.1940) describes why Gollé received the Knight’s Cross…

“Major Josef Gollé had the lion’s share in the successful seizure of Fort 240 through his personal intervention in the fighting. This fortification was equipped with 12 armoured turrets and was consequently one of the strongest parts of the Maginot Line. With a grenade in hand he stormed into the extensive interior of the fortification at the head of his assault troop and forced the enemy commander to surrender.”
