Just before the Christmas of 1942, the 10./Artillerie-Regiment (mot) 3 found itself defending the Marinovka airport west of Stalingrad. In a particular successful day of fighting the Batterie destroyed 18 Soviet tanks, of which Heinrich Schwarz personally accounted for 12. In doing so he played a major role in preventing a Soviet breakthrough, and he was consequently awarded the Knight's Cross.
