"For gallantry in action near Empoli, Italy, from 13 to 18 October 1944. As company commander, Company B, Major Swabey led the attack on a major objective, which had been twice lost to superior forces, and by brilliant leadership inspired his men to inflict severe losses on the enemy and to the capture of the objective.
When he had seized the objective he proceeded to consolidate in the face of heavy mortar and shell fire setting an outstanding example of gallantry to his officers and men by visiting their positions and establishing contact with the companies on his flank.
By night-fall he had directed the artillery and mortar fire to such good effect that the remnants of the enemy were forced back in a demoralized and shattered condition.
Throughout the action Major Swabey displayed unusual physical and mental endurance and his outstanding leadership contributed to the success of the Allied Armies in Italy."
