The following wartime excerpt (dated 30.08.1940) describes why Wickede received the Knight’s Cross…
“Oberstleutnant von Wickede was wounded during the Polish campaign whilst serving as the commander of a Jäger-Bataillon. Yet, despite not being fully recovered, he nonetheless took over command of his assigned Infanterie-Regiment as the ground war in the West began. In this capacity Oberstleutnant von Wickede achieved outstanding feats-of-arms. His Regiment stood in the foremost line during the entire duration of operations in the West. It was frequently the performance of this Regiment that determined success for its entire parent formation. The fact that it was able to accomplish its assigned tasks in such a masterful fashion was in no small part thanks to the prudence and ruthless leadership of its commander.”
