Biography

Major-General Sir Eustace F. Tickell, Royal Engineers was educated at Bedford School and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich.
Commissioned Second Lieutenant, Royal Engineers, 18.7.1913 and served during the Great War on the Western Front from 9.9.1914.
Tickel saw action in Greek Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, the Aegean Sea, and Egypt.
During the Second World War he served as Chief Engineer, British Troops in Egypt and the Middle East; Chief Engineer to Field Marshal Montgomery and in the North West Europe Campaign.
In retirement he held the honorary position of Colonel Commandant, Corps of Royal Engineers, 1950-58.

His son Marston Eustace Tickell also became an officer in the Royal Engineers and was awarded a MC in 1945 and reached the rank of Major-General.

"As Director of Works Brig. TICKELL has been responsible for conducting accomodation for a very large number of troops in a very short time and usually at very short notice. The building of all these camps with their necssary services has called for very great technical skill and a great deal of drive both of which Brig. TICKELL posseses to a high decree. In addition he has been responsible for the supply of all engineering stores for the Middle East which alone is a very big undertaking, and the fact thet these stores have been available is due to to his foresight and energy. I consider the work he has done to be outstanding."
