The following wartime excerpt describes why Dewitz would be awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“During the hard defensive battles along the Murmansk front the enemy attacked both the front and flanks of the Division with a great superiority in numbers. In this time Leutnant der Reserve von Dewitz achieved an exceptional, battle-deciding feat of bravery during an attack by his Bataillon against Hill 70 (northern flank) on the 04.05.1942. As the Bataillon adjutant he created an assault troop out of hastily assembled elements and penetrated into the enemy’s identified assembly area. Through this action further units of the Bataillon were able to follow-up in his wake and then scatter and destroy the enemy forces that had wished to launch a counterthrust.”
