    (2) His work was continually under most difficult conditions including heavy bombing attacks.
    (3) His energy, ability and keen tactical sense were of the greatest possible assistance.
    (4) He carried out his duties with an improvised Staff which he held together by his own example. Under fire he was an inspiration to all."

    Brigadier Stewart, after a tour of duty in New Zealand as Deputy Chief of the General Staff during the time of the Japanese threat, rejoined the 2nd New Zealand Division in July 1943. In the Italian campaign he commanded the 4th Armoured Brigade temporarily, during the Battle of the Sangro and at Cassino. Later he took over command of the 5th NW Infantry Brigade which he commanded in the mountain operations of the Division during the Allied offensive in May, and in the heavy fighting to drive the enemy north of Florence in which his Brigade played a very important part. Brigadier Stewart revealed great qualities as a commander in the field of both armour and infantry and he also displayed staff work of the highest order. he set standards of precision and efficiency and devotion to duty which were an inspiration to everyone with whom he came in contact."

    "For exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service to the Government of the United States as Deputy Chief of the Central Staff, Army Headquarters, New Zealand, from the 24th February, 1942, to 15th July, 1943. During this period Brigadier Stewart in this responsible position displayed high qualities of coordinating ability and was of the greatest assistance to all units of the United States Armed Forces stationed in New Zealand by giving them unstinted co-operation and assistance in training and operational facilities. By his friendly co-operation he contributed greatly in enabling our forces successfully to establish themselves in New Zealand and rendered services which were of great material assistance to the United States and the war effort."
