"On 3 April 1943, 3rd Nigeria Regiment were ordered to attack and capture the feature Point 990 which overlooked the road to Arakan. Lieutenant Kimontt commanded a platoon which had orders to carry out a deception plan on the subsidiary kerafi and then to launch a final attack on Point 990.
The platoon gained its first objective, but on reaching a point 100 yards from its final objective, the leading section came under heavy enemy MMG and LMG fire in addition to being subjected to well directed grenade fire.
The two leading scouts were killed and one other wounded, Lieutenant Kimontt who was with the leading section, although himself wounded by MMG fire and grenades, personally destroyed the crew of the enemy Light Machine gun.
He and his African Platoon Serjeant still exposed to continuous enemy fire remained and gave covering fire whilst the section evacuated their casualties to a safe place.
Only when his section had completely withdrawn did he vacate his own precarious position.
Lieutenant Kimontt showed complete disregard of his own considerable injuries and exhibited high qualities of leadership and devotion to duty, without which the enemy would undoubtably have inflicted a far larger number of casualties than actually occurred.
In addition this officers action in knocking out the enemy light machine gun and drawing the enemy's fire materially assisted the capture of Point 990."
