The following newspaper excerpt (dated 27.02.1943) describes why Fink received the Knight’s Cross…
“Leutnant Fink and his small party of just 6 men withstood the onslaught of strong enemy forces against a village between the Don and the Donez rivers. They inflicted heavy losses on the Bolsheviks, and through their actions they enable the recapture of the village via a hasty counterthrust. out in the village of Wesselyj Gaj against the massive Soviet forces that had entered the village. Over the course of a two hour battle they inflicted heavy losses on the Soviets, and through these actions they enabled the eventual recapture of the village via a counterthrust.”
Other sources reveal that the village being defended by Fink and his men was Wesselyj Gaj. The defensive phase of this action took place over a two hour period on the 03.01.1943.
