"Lt-Col WILD has been second-in-command to the Commander of "A" Force for the past year. During the absence of the latter during September and October 1942, he was in charge of all arrangements for the deception of the enemy in regard to the Eighth Army's offensive from EL ALAMEIN He was also responsible for the implementation of important parts of the plans for covering the landing of the Allied Force in N.AFRICA.
Lt-Col WILD's ingenious ability, sound judgement and energy contributed greatly to the success of these two highly important deception plans. During December and January 1942/3 this officer visited EAST and SOUTH AFRICA (including PORTUGESE EAST AFRICA) with a view to organizing deception machinery in those areas and arranging for the implementation of important deception plans on behalf of the Commander-in-Chief, Eastern Fleet. By the exercise of much-needed perseverance and tact, together with considerable professional skill, Lt-Col WILD succeeded in restoring a most unfortunate situation and laying sound foundations for future work in that area. In particular he succeeded in gaining the close co-operation of the Union authorities without whose aid successful deception operations in some most fruitful areas would never have been possible.
As a result of Lt-Col WILD's tour staffs have been provided and permanent machinery established to handle both the planning and implementation of deception throughout East and South African territories.
