"This Warrant Officer has been a member of the Regiment for over 3 years and as Squadron Sergeant Major has shown excellent organizing ability. He took part in the invasion of Sicily and piloted a glider to Arnhem.
Throughout the battle of Arnhem he displayed exemplary bravery, devotion to duty and disregard for his own safety. During every eemy attack SSM Blackwood was to be seen cheering on his men, and his personality nad contempt for danger was mainly responsible for his section remaining intact. He was wounded in the face and hands but refused to leave his squadron and was wounded a third time and taken prisoner. He has now been repatriated."
