Biography

In the May days of 1940, Justinus (Joost) de Josselin de Jong was a Guardsman in the 4th Regiment Artillery that acted as support for the 10th, 15th and 22nd Infantry Regiments on the southern flank of the Valley Line.

After the capitulation, he was assigned to the Marechaussee in October 1940 to undergo officer training at the Depot Marechaussee. This training was disbanded in October 1941 by order of Rauter and the cadets transferred to the Nazi-oriented Police Officers' Training Course (POB) in Schalkhaar. Joost refused this and was subsequently dismissed.

After a failed attempt to escape to England, he comes into contact with Nic Erkens, leader of the resistance group of the same name. They engaged in numerous illegal activities but in November 1942, the group was rounded up after infiltration and Joost was also arrested. After being severely beaten during interrogations, he and the rest of the group end up before the Feldgericht in Utrecht. Twelve men are sentenced to death but Joost is doomed to disappear via Kamp Amersfoort on 27 October 1943 as a ‘Nacht und Nebel’ prisoner and deported to Natzweiler concentration camp. There, he is beaten to death by a Kapo on 8 March 1944.
