Biography

Simon Kadijk, originally from Groningen, had a farm with his family in polder Kort- en Lang Ambacht in the Sliedrecht Biesbosch. During the war, his farm was a place of refuge for numerous people in hiding who stayed not only on the farm but also on arks hidden nearby.

On the night of 9/10 May 1944, at the nearby Helsluis, a shootout took place between the Sliedrecht KP and Landwachters looking for people in hiding. In this shootout, two Landwachters were killed and the two wounded members of the KP sought safety at Kadijk's farm and were cared for there. This shootout would lead to the big raid in the villages around the Merwede a few days later.

After the start of the crossings through the Biesbosch in November 1944, Kadijk's farm was a base and way station for the line crossers during their trips to liberated territory and back again.
