The following divisional order of the day (dated 15.07.1943) details why Karg was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“The Führer and Supreme Commander of the Wehrmacht has awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross to Feldwebel Karg Ulrich, of the 17./Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment 91.

Feldwebel Karg, who had previously proven himself as a highly successful Gruppenführer in the Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment 91 during many battles and patrols, especially distinguished himself southeast of Nowji on the night of the 17/18.02.1943. On his own initiative, he led his Zug against an enemy that outnumbered him tenfold and enabled the disengagement of the Regiment’s rearguard from the Diana position.

Encircled from all sides, he commanded the defense against the strong enemy envelopment attacks with exemplary bravery and circumspection despite being wounded twice. Over the course of a three-hour fighting retreat, he broke through the enemy lines with his brave Zug and reached the rest of the Regiment while taking along all of the wounded. Through his unquestioning willingness to fight, and the firm command of his Zug, he thwarted the enemy attempt to interrupt the retreat movements of the Division and secured the withdrawal of our own forces to the Poseidon position.

Feldwebel Karg is the 11th Knight’s Cross Holder of the 4. Gebirgs-Division.”
