Awarded for his actions during the heavy defensive combat around Voronezh in mid-September 1942. Here he took over a squad of his 9. Kompanie and drove a deep wedge into the Soviet lines with this unit, eliminating several MG nests in the process despite his being badly wounded. By doing this he decisively contributed to concluding this battle in his Regiment’s favour.
