Awarding Letter:
"Working all day in bitter cold and mus to evacuate nine wounded infantrymen from no-man's land won Pfc Joseph V Torre, a 26 year old litter bearer of the 119th Med Bn one of the first Silver Stars awarded by the 44th Inf Div.
It was near Leintrey, France and a patrol had advanced nearly 3 miles ahead of the Division line. Suddenly intense German mortar and small arms fire smashed their ranks -- and nine wounded men lay shivering in the winter mud. One of the unwounded infantrymen made his way to the aid station and Pfc Torre's squad went back to get the wounded.
Despite a broken hand suffered the previous day, Torre spent the day going from the 44th lines to the wounded. Eight of the men were evacuated before dark, and dusk found the enemy laying a heavy artillery barrage on the entire area.
Orders were given for all men to take and keep cover, but Torre went out anyway with a fellow medic and made another exhausting five mile trip, in darkness and through artillery fire, to rescue the ninth man."
