"During the action at Arnhem between the 17th and 25th September this officer displayed outstanding leadership in the area of Oosterbeek. The area was subjected to intense mortar and shell fire and continual harassing by enemy tanks and self-propelled guns. In spite of injuries he organised and led sorties against enemy infiltration continuously throughout the period. His example and courage throughout was of the highest order and at all times he showed complete disregard for his personal safety. The protection of the Airlanding Troops in the area was largely dependent on the detachment commanded by this officer. Through his inspiration and powers of leadership the situation which at times became critical was eventually stabilised."
