On 29 January 1943, this Japanese J1 submarine encountered the New Zealand minesweepers Kiwi and Moa. Unable to penetrate the I1's armour with their deck guns, the minesweepers rammed and chased her to shallow water, eventually forcing her to run aground on the reef at Kamimbo Bay.
The second image (with two divers) is a section of the hull rear of the sail. The third is looking into the body of the sub about the location of the control room and the fourth one is an air cylinder that juts out of the wreck toward the stern. The final image is looking from the beach across the reef where the I-1 was wrecked with Savo Island in the distance. The wreck location is just off the reef edge on the far left of the image.
