Memorial Synagogue Korschenbroich-Glehn

A memorial plaque on the former synagogue building at Schützendelle 2 points to its former use.

Inscription:
This plaque was erected in remembrance to the destruction of the synagogue as well as the persecution and murdering of the Jewish fellow citizens by the national socialists during the years of 1939 to 1945.

In the 1870s, the small Jewish community of Glehn succeeded in realizing plans for a synagogue building at the Schützendelle realized by a grant from the municipality and a collection in the Rhine Province.

At the beginning of the Nazi period about 10 Jewish families were still living in Glehn.
During the November pogrom, all residential and (few) commercial buildings of Jewish families were demolished and looted on the spot; the interior of the synagogue was also destroyed or was stolen.

An incineration of the building was omitted, however, because the fire chief of the fire department had intervened. After the pogrom all Jews were forbidden to continue their business. Some Jewish residents succeeded in their emigration; the remaining were deported and did not return.

In 1939, the municipality acquired the externally undamaged synagogue building; during the war it was damaged by air raids In the 1950s it was converted into a residential building.

"Stumbling stones" keep the memory of former Jewish residents awake in Korschenbroich since 2006; The last twelve stones were moved to Glehn in 2009, so that in the city area a total of about 30 can be found.
