Balchik Airforce Base

The airport was developed by Romania in 1935 and when the area was transfered back to Bulgaria, Bulgaria transformed it in 1941 into a military airport. The first aircraft to be stationed there where Heinkel 111 and Junckers 88 from the German Luftwaffe for reconnaissance purposes but with the beginning of operation Barbarossa the planes left.
Initially the Bulgarian airforce based the Fighter School and from 4th of August 1941 5 CZ build Letov-Šmolik Š-328 from the 2nd Air Regiment were to provide anti-aircraft defenses to ships at the Black Sea going and coming to the Bosphorus along the Bulgarian and Romanian coastlines. Also there have been Bulgarian ME-109E based to protect the Bulgarian Airspace.
After the war it remained until 1998 a military base.
