War Memorial Kuringen Easter Bombing 1944

This memorial commemorates the civilians of Kuringen killed during the air raid on Easter Saturday the 8th April 1944.
Nearby was (and still is) a major train marshaling yards area of Hasselt .This was the first major air carried out against the station yards here as part of the Allies transportation plan to deny the German armed forces strength in front of the Allied invasion of Western Europe.
The bombing was carried out by B-26 Marauders and some of the escorting P-47 Thunderbolts of the US 9th Air Force.
Nearby in the direction of Hasselt at Tommelen are still the scars of this air raid with around 100 bomb craters left to nature.
This memorial was unveiled on the 40th anniversary of the bombings on the 8th April 1984 by the mayor and the president of the veterans association.As the graves of those killed in the air raid were not in such good condition it was decided to have them interred together in this communal grave ,where this memorial now stands.
The memorial is made from bluestone ,with the black cross from granite.
